New 2012 KTM 350 EXC-F

2012 KTM 350 EXC-F Review

350 EXC-F: THE DAWNING OF A NEW ERA KTM is applying the recipe for success from the 2010 MX World Championship to the Enduro WC. The new 350 EXC-F combines the ultra-easy handling of a 250 with the powerful performance of a 450. The result is maximum chances of victory for professionals and maximum fun factor for amateurs. The extremely wide rev range and powerful performance of the DOHC high-tech four-stroke and the efficient rideability of the new 350 EXC-F set the tone for previously unattainable enduro characteristics.     2012 KTM 350 EXC-F Features and Benefits HANDLING OF A 250       FRAME The new 350 EXC-F's lightweight frame made from high-quality chrome-molybdenum steel is distinguished by an extremely high level of lateral stiffness. It is also excellent at absorbing jolts introduced by the suspension system, whereby the playful handling and comfort of the 350 EXC-F have been further optimised. SWINGARM, PDS The new 350 EXC-F's lightweight cast aluminium swingarm accommodates the WP shock absorber almost centrally, in order to load the swing arms more evenly. The PDS shock absorber with adjustable rebound and high/low-speed compression damping works with high progression, in spite of the direct linking.     TELESCOPIC FORK The new 350 EXC-F is equipped with the latest WP upside-down fork with wide adjustment ranges. The sensitive responsiveness and outstanding damping of the open-cartridge fork with 48 mm (1.89 in) outer tubes are a perfect complement for the 350 EXC-F's playful handling and precision.     WHEELS Practically unbeatable in terms of weight and stability, the wheels have CNC-machined hubs, Excel rims, zinc/nickel-coated spokes and aluminium nipples. They reduce the unsprung and gyroscopic masses, hence boosting the playful handling of the new 350 EXC-F.   PERFORMANCE OF A 450       ENGINE The new 350 EXC-F's compact, state-of-the-art four-stroke engine excels with an extremely wide usable rev range and the performance of an engine with much greater displacement. A laterally positioned balancer shaft, which acts as the drive for both timing chain and water pump, eliminates the vibration typical of this model type.     CYLINDER HEAD In the cylinder head with two overhead camshafts, four titanium valves are actuated by extremely lightweight, carbon-coated cam levers. This elaborate valve train, the ultra-light pistons and the new 350 EXC-F's extremely short-stroke engine facilitate speeds of up to 13,000 1/min.     BALANCER SHAFT The balancer shaft not only eliminates vibration, but also acts as an intermediate shaft for the valve train and as the drive for the water pump. This intelligent multi-functionality makes a key contribution to the compactness and low weight of the new 350 EXC-F's engine.     CRANKSHAFT When designing the crankshaft on the new 350 EXC-F, KTM engineers focussed on a reduction in the reciprocating weight and fine adjustment of the rotating masses. In this way, they managed to combine minimum vibration with an outstanding free-revving nature and optimum traction.     LUBRICATION SYSTEM The new 350 EXC-F's engine is equipped with two oil pumps. A pressure pump lubricates the engine and clutch and cools the ignition, while a suction pump draws oil from the crankcase, using it to lubricate the transmission. At the same time, negative pressure arises in the casing, which provides an additional boost to engine power.     EMS The Keihin engine management system with electronic fuel injection ensures spontaneous responsiveness and maximum performance from the engine. Various engine characteristics can be activated with an optional map select switch.     CLUTCH The 350 EXC-F's newly developed clutch, with a robust steel cage and transmission-friendly back-damping, makes use of a spring washer for the first time instead of the customary conical springs, hence substantially reducing the operating force. The hydraulic actuation mechanism from Brembo® facilitates sensitive modulation of the clutch.     TRANSMISSION The six-gear transmission on the new 350 EXC-F has been designed especially to match the characteristics of the 350cc engine and meet the demands of enduro sport, excelling with its precise and easy shifting.     SILENCER The new 350 EXC-F's silencer with its large volume reduces noise levels to the stricter standards of the future.   WITH ELECTRIC STARTER       ELECTRIC STARTER The new 350 EXC-F is equipped with both a kickstarter and an electric starter. The drive for the electric starter is integrated into the generator cover instead of the engine case, so the bike can be converted into a pure kickstarter simply by replacing the generator cover.   OPTIMUM ERGONOMICS       BODYWORK The new 350 EXC-F's bodywork with the very slim seat and spoiler lines, plus excellent contact points, perfects the bike's ergonomics, making handling even simpler and more precise. The long rear fender protects the rider very effectively from swirled up stones.

The longer rear fender protects the rider even more effectively from swirled up stones.   NOW WITH EVEN MORE PERFORMANCE

NEW ENGINE With the 450 EXC's newly developed engine, KTM engineers have created a new dimension: The power unit has been redesigned from scratch and is now more compact, lighter and more powerful than before. Reduced reciprocating weight and a balancer shaft minimise vibration.     NEW EFI/EMS The newly developed Keihin engine management system with electronic fuel injection ensures spontaneous responsiveness from the engine. Various engine characteristics can be activated with an optional map select switch.     NEW OIL CIRCUIT The 450 EXC's new engine is equipped with a common oil circuit for engine and transmission, and two oil pumps. A pressure pump lubricates the engine, while a suction pump draws oil from the crankcase, using it to lubricate the transmission and the clutch. At the same time and in conjunction with a steel diaphragm, negative pressure arises in the casing, which boosts the engine power.     NEW BALANCER SHAFT The 450 EXC's new, more compact balancer shaft not only eliminates vibration, but also serves as the drive for the water pump. This intelligent multi-functionality contributes to the compactness and low weight of the 450 EXC's new engine.     NEW ENGINE CASE The 450 EXC's new engine case weighs almost 2 kg (4 lb.) less than its predecessor, although it offers better resistance to damage due to stone impact or falls. This has been achieved by using a high-strength, elastic aluminium alloy and changing from sand-casting to die-casting.     NEW CRANKSHAFT When designing the new crankshaft on the 450 EXC, KTM engineers focussed on reducing the reciprocating weight. Thanks to the new, lighter connecting rod and the new, lighter piston, they managed to achieve minimum vibration, while maximising engine-speed strength.     NEW CYLINDER AND PISTON The 450 EXC's cylinder has been further developed especially for the new engine configuration. The new, 15 % lighter forged piston minimises reciprocating weight and optimises durability at high engine speeds. New, nitrided piston rings ensure highest levels of resistance to wear.     NEW CYLINDER HEAD All ports and the combustion chamber have been redesigned in the OHC cylinder head of the 450 EXC's new engine. The new camshaft actuates four valves via lightweight rocker arms. High-quality titanium valves are used on the intake side. As before, the cylinder head cover mounted at an angle simplifies service work.     NEW SILENCER The 450 EXC's new, improved silencer featuring a special Six Days coating not only offers greater volume and a new design, it also reduces noise levels to the stricter standards of the future.     NEW CLUTCH The 450 EXC's newly developed clutch, with a robust steel cage and transmission-friendly back-damping, makes use of a spring washer for the first time instead of the customary conical springs, hence substantially reducing the operating force. The hydraulic actuation mechanism from Brembo® facilitates sensitive modulation of the clutch.   NOW WITH AN EVEN MORE SUPERIOR CHASSIS       NEW FRAME The completely revamped frame made from high-quality chrome-molybdenum steel is characterised by even greater lateral stiffness. Furthermore, it is even better at absorbing jolts introduced by the suspension system, whereby the simple handling and comfort of the 450 EXC have been further optimised. NEW SWINGARM, NEW PDS, NEW SETTING The 450 EXC's new, lighter, cast aluminium swingarm accommodates the shock absorber more centrally, in order to load the swing arms more evenly. The new, 7 mm (0.28 in) longer PDS shock absorber with adjustable rebound and high/low-speed compression damping, and a new setting is installed more flatly, so providing even more progression.     TELESCOPIC FORK, NEW SETTING The 450 EXC is equipped with the latest WP upside-down fork with wider adjustment ranges and a new setting. The sensitive responsiveness and outstanding damping of the open-cartridge fork with 48 mm (1.89 in) outer tubes are a perfect complement for the 450 EXC's simple handling and precision.     NEW WHEELS Practically unbeatable in terms of weight and stability, the new wheels have CNC-machined hubs, new black-anodised rims from Giant, black zinc/nickel-coated spokes and ultra-light aluminium nipples. They reduce the unsprung and gyroscopic masses, hence bolstering the simple handling of the 450 EXC.

KTM for racers aged between about 4 and 10 years and up to a height of 130cm. This is no "toy" with dodgily built cheap components; this is a proper motorcycle that sets standards in its class for safety, child ergonomics and riding fun. Equipped with high-quality components throughout, such as generously dimensioned suspension elements, high-quality disc brakes, a sturdy frame made from chrome-molybdenum stainless steel, alloy rims and aluminium handlebars with safety padding. The engine is a completely new development specifically for the 50SX and excels with linear power development and innovative solutions, such as a centrifugally controlled automatic clutch that can be adjusted individually to the riding ability of the budding racer: nice and gentle for beginners, then later powerful and direct with higher revs. Another sensible option for beginners lacking in experience: the restrictor kit from the PowerParts range of accessories.

The 50 SX with its highly modern 2-stroke is the ultimate mini race bike. Derived from fullsize race bikes it is adopted exactly for the needs of our small racers. Start it, open the throttle – that’s it! Easier than riding a bicycle thanks to the centrifugal clutch.

And just like the grown-up KTMs, the 65 SX also defines the benchmark in terms of performance, handling, standard equipment and workmanship.

A powerhouse : The 65 SX engine

At the forefront of two-stroke technology, this engine shows its brute force at all speeds, always responds readily to the throttle and handles perfectly. It is completely water-cooled including the crankcase, withstanding even the toughest of dogfights. The revolutionary engine design with the crankshaft positioned close to the centre of gravity not only allows perfect handling of your 65 SX but optimises the intake flow in the crankcase. The patented KTM pressure-control led exhaust valve (PCEV) and re-engineered out let slide give you the edge in terms of power. On top of this, the new strengthened crankcase can handle even the largest jumps with ease, Ensuring that you always finish first .
